Parts of an electronic device rest in the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site landfill operated by Waste Management of Colorado, Inc., east of Aurora. Coloradans send the majority of their electronic waste to community landfills rather than recycling the devices. In 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated that of the 2.25 million tons of TVs, cellphones and computers ready for disposal, only 18 percent were recycled. The remaining 82 percent mainly went to landfills, the Denver Post reported.Photo: Joe Mahoney |
