Blue Lady not to enter Indian waters till SC nod

15 May 2006 (Ahmedabad) – One of the world’s longest ocean liners, SS Norway alias Blue Lady, would not be allowed to enter Indian shores till the Supreme Court’s appointed committee of technical experts gave its opinion on it, Gujarat Pollution Control Board officials said here today.
The Supreme Court has directed that the entry of Blue Lady into the ship breaking yard at Alang in Gujarat as well as other issues related to containment of toxic waste will be dealt with by the SC-appointed committee and thus the ship could not enter Indian shores, GPCB Chairman KV Bhanujan said in a release.
The ship was headed to Alang ship breaking yard in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat from Malaysia for dismantling.
Greenpeace had raised an alarm saying that the ship had three times more toxic material like asbestos than the French warship Le Clemenceau.
