SC tells NGO to file plea on 'Blue Lady'

The Supreme Court, instrumental in forcing decommissioned French warship Clemenceau to turn back during its journey to the Alang shipbreaking yard, on Tuesday took note of TOI report about one of the longest ocean liners SS Norway heading towards Gujarat coast.
Counsel Sanjay Parikh, appearing for NGO 'Research Foundation for Science and Technology', mentioned the TOI report on SS Norway before a Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and S H Kapadia, which, during the peak of controversy over Clemenceau had ordered appraisal of the infrastructural capability of the Alang ship-breaking yard for safe scrapping of ships.
As the Bench said it was aware of the media report on SS Norway heading towards India, Parikh said the NGO would file an application before the court as soon as it gathered relevant information on the ocean liner, popularly known as 'Blue Lady'.
The government, which had constituted the committee on the orders of SC, requested the court through additional solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam for extension of the committee's tenure by three months. The court acceded to the request and extended the committee's term till July.
