HC directs govt not to allow toxic Alfaship

The High Court (HC) directed Wednesday the government authorities not to allow the vessel MT Alfaship, one of the 50 toxic vessels of the world, to proceed further towards the Chittagong Port for the next two months.
The vessel is now waiting at the outer-anchorage, report agencies.
Passing the interim injunction on the toxic ship, following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) writ, an HC bench asked the Director General of Coast Guard, Director General of Shipping, Collector of Customs and Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) to comply with the orders.
The bench, comprising Justice M Awlad Ali and Justice Zinat Ara, passed the orders on the writ filed by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA).
The court also issued rule upon the government to explain its failure to prevent entry of the Alfaship into the territorial waters of Bangladesh and why its arrival sans approval of the Director General of Shipping should not be declared "illegal".
Furthermore, the HC issued rule asking the government to show cause why it should not be directed to take immediate steps for banning entry of any of the 50 dangerous vessels listed by the Greenpeace considering environmental hazards.
