SC panel wants toxic ship stopped

13 January 2006 (New Delhi) – A Supreme Court Monitoring Committee has recommended that a decommissioned French warship should not be allowed to enter India.
The vessel Clemenceau containing large quantity of asbestos linked to cancer, plans to dismantle at a shipyard in Gujarat.
The Committee in its report said the government should ask France for details about what the ship contains.
Allowing the ship into Indian waters would be in violation of various orders passed by the Supreme Court, the report said.
The Supreme Court will decide on the ship on Monday.
Egypt rejects Clemenceau
Clemenceau, which sailed into Egypt on its way to India – was ordered out of Egyptian waters.
The vessel did not have papers to prove that it has been decontaminated of hazardous material in line with the Basel Convention.
An emergency meeting between the French Ambassador and Egypt's Environment Minister did not help.
It will soon become clear if the ship will continue its journey or forced to return to France.
Clemenceau left France in December amid protests by activists who say India should not be used as a dumping ground for toxic waste.
