Asbestos aboard Clemenceau raises concerns

1 January 2006 (New Delhi) – French decommissioned aircraft carrier Clemenceau is on its way to Gujarat's ship breaking yards.
But latest reports suggest that the amount of hazardous asbestos on board the ship could be much higher than previously reported.
Asbestos is a carcinogenic agent and French environmentalists have been objecting to the ship being taken to another country for breaking.
Now the president of Technopure, a French company which pulled out 70 tonnes of asbestos from the carrier Clemenceau, estimates there could be over 500 tonnes still left on the ship.
This figure is in stark contrast to what the French government has claimed, that there is only a little over 100 tonnes.
