Clemenceau sails for Indian scrapyard
by NDTV Correspondent, NDTV.com (India)

31 December 2005 (Paris) – French decommissioned aircraft carrier Clemenceau has sailed for India, where it's headed for the scrapyard.

Ecologists have been campaigning to stop the ship, which they say has hazardous asbestos insulation, from making the journey.

The ship sailed after a local court rejected an "urgent appeal" to stop its departure.

The ship still has around 105 tonnes of asbestos. There was 220 tonnes of asbestos on it and only 70 tonnes was removed. Greece and Turkey have turned back the Clemenceau before.
