Frederik should be 'driven out'
by Lloyd's Register - Fairplay
31 May 2005 – The Indian Supreme Court monitoring committee on hazardous waste has recommended that the Danish ship formerly Kong Frederik IX should be 'driven out' of Indian waters.
Further, an enquiry should be set up to identify those responsible for the vessel's illegal entry, said committee chairman G Thyagarajan. The Gujarat Maritime Board, Gujarat Pollution Board and Central Pollution Board had inspected the ship and gave it permission to be beached, but not broken.
Thyagarajan said the committee takes a "serious and alarming view of the ship which could have far reaching and adverse implications to India's environmental care and concerns and international image".
He said the ship should go back to Denmark for decontaminated and only thereafter return to India in accordance with the Basel Convention as well as rules of the Indian government.
The committee is expected to pass a formal order on 2 June.
