Media Statement from Hartlepool Council regarding able UK
by Hartlepool Council
4 November 2003 (Hartlepool) – Councillors in Hartlepool voted unanimously this morning to urge the Secretary of State for Transport Alastair Darling to use his powers to re-route the four former US navy ships heading for the town.
The decision was taken at an Extraordinary Council meeting which was held in the Civic Centre.
Before the ships set off from the USA, Hartlepool Council made it clear that in its view the necessary planning permission was not in place to enable Able UK to create a dry dock facility.
Speaking after the meeting, Council Chairman, Councillor Carl Richardson, said: "Clearly Hartlepool councillors are firmly of the view that the ships cannot be allowed to enter British waters given that there are a number of permissions not in place.
"This is a view shared by Environment Minister Elliot Morley, the Environment Agency and many other organisations and individuals.
"This is a very serious situation we are facing and the Secretary of State for Transport must use his powers now and order these ships to return to the USA."
