'Sisters at Sea' Begin Final Journey
by Judith Haynes, The Daily Press
6 October 2003 – Tons of chemical pollutants - and memories - will be leaving the James River this morning as two 1945 ships are towed from the "ghost fleet" to a scrapyard in England.
The Canisteo, known as the Can-Do to the decades of Navy men who served on it, and the Caloosahatchee, nicknamed Caloos, worked together in the Atlantic Fleet.
They are expected to leave for their final ocean crossings approximately two hours apart, beginning at about 7 a.m.
For those who have been worried that PCBs make the two fleet oilers, along with other rusty hulks in the "ghost fleet," an environmental catastrophe waiting to happen, it will be good riddance.
