Danger Fleet Banned

10 August 2003 –
The Government have banned a fleet of rusting American navy ships from sailing around Scotland on their way to be scrapped.
But yesterday an MP expressed concerns a deal over the vessels had already been signed.
Orkney and Shetland Lib-Dem MP Alistair Carmichael received a written Commons reply saying the ships will not be given permission to sail off Scotland's coast until a full environmental impact study has been completed.
Plans to scrap the fleet of ageing, toxin-laden vessels were first exposed in the Sunday Mail six weeks ago.
Last week shipbreakers Able UK confirmed they had signed a deal to scrap 13 hulks at their yard on Teesside.
But Carmichael said: "Given that these ships are believed to be carrying asbestos and toxic PCBs then a thorough investigation is vital.
"The fact that a contract has been entered into must not be used as a lever to put undue pressure on the Department of Transport to grant permission for these ships to travel in UK waters."
