Environmentalists Targetting Dell
by KXAN-TV 36 (Austin, TX)
16 July 2003 (Austin, TX.)– Environmentalists are targeting Round Rock-based Dell Computer in an effort to clean up toxic chemical waste left behind by obsolete PC's.
"We're delivering a truckload of Dell waste to the companies annual meeting on Friday, the 18th, symbolizing the even larger volume of hazardous waste that Dell is still not taking responsibility for," Sarah Westervelt with the Basel Action Network said.
The trash is on a public relations tour, trucking from Seattle, through Portland, Denver and Dallas before stopping in our area.
The day before the tour began, Dell announced it will pick up old computers for $50 a piece.
"We're committed to being environmentally responsible. We're really committed to recycling, and we do question the motivation of special interest groups that continue to attack us," Bryant Hilton, Dell spokesperson, said.
But environmentalists say that's not enough.
Dell insists their opponents are more interested in making headlines than solving the problem.
