California Senate Committee Approves E-Waste Bill
by Wastenews.com
23 May 2003 (Sacramento, CA.) –
The California state Senate´s Appropriations Committee yesterday approved a bill that would require electronics manufacturers to develop and finance a free and convenient system to recycle end-of-life electronics.
The committee approved the measure by an 8-5 vote. The bill, introduced by Sen. Byron Sher, a Democrat, moves next to the full Senate for consideration.
In addition to requiring manufacturers to create a recycling system for electronics, the bill would prohibit manufacturers from exporting electronic waste unless they can demonstrate that the exported material will be handled in a way that protects public health as effectively as state laws.
Gov. Gray Davis vetoed an electronic waste bill last year that called for manufacturers to charge a $10 fee for each cathode-ray tube monitor and television sold in the state.
