The U.S. Office of the Environmental Executive will kick off a pilot program next week in Portland, Ore., to reduce the environmental impacts of the government´s use of electronic equipment.
The Federal Electronics Challenge is the first concrete action taken by federal agencies that have agreed to work together on the issue, said John Howard, federal environmental executive, at the International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment and Electronics Recycling Summit on May 21.
During the pilot, the Office of the Environmental Executive will work with partners including federal agencies, electronics manufacturers and nongovernmental organizations. The government will study its approach to purchasing, use and end-of-life management of electronic equipment. It will begin the pilot project with the Federal Network for Sustainability office in Portland. It plans to roll out the national Federal Electronics Challenge in 2004.
