BORNEO PAYING ATTENTION TO WRONGFUL DECLARATIONS BY IMPORTERS

BORNEO BULLETIN

February 24, 1998 -- Borneo Hazardous wastes Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said the government is paying more attention to wrongful declaration by importers on the import of hazardous wastes to the country. "The exporters, on their part, export the hazardous wastes to these importers who later declared their imports in the guise of fertilisers. This sort of activity is very hard to monitor and the government now is paying more attention to the problem," he said at the opening of the five-day Fourth Meeting on the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention here.

Law added that since Aug 1, 1996, the government has implemented the Malaysian Environmental Quality Act, which among others, provided a fine of up to RM500,000 and a jail term of up to five years.

"I would like to ensure the international community that we will enforce these provisions without fear or favour but fairly," he said.
