THOR CHEMICALS:
DAMAGES CLAIM
April 10, 1997 --
British-based Thor Holdings,
owner of Thor Chemicals factory in Cato Ridge, is being sued
in the English courts for damages by three South African
widows and 17 factory workers, alleged victims of mercury
poisoning. Richard Meeran, London lawyer for the claimants,
said the granting of legal aid meant the case could be
fought 'on a level playing field, a scenario which was
patently lacking in the South African criminal prosecution'.
Thor claim to have settled the matter out of court with a
R9,4 million deal, but The Mercury of April 10th reports
that the claimants' Lawyers deny settlement in Thor
poisoning case.
