SECURITY TEAMS DETAIN 15 ACTIVISTS OF GREENPEACE ALIAGA

ALIAGA, Turkey, 14 January 2002 -- Security teams detained on Monday Greenpeace's 15 activists who protested toxic waste commerce near a ship yard in Aliaga township of northern Izmir province. Greenpeace activists hanged a banner on a ship named ''Star of Venice'' belonging to a Swiss company, and then wrote ''stop the toxic waste trade'' with spray paint on another ship named ''Best''. Meanwhile, 15 activists were taken into custody by security forces.
