MOZAMBIQUE: MINISTRY REVOKES AUTHORIZATION FOR WASTE COMPANY TO OPERATE

MAPUTO, Mozambique, October 30, 1998 ('Metical' web site, via BBC Summary of World Broadcasts) The Ministry for Environmental Action Coordination (Micoa) yesterday revoked its 15th February 1996 order authorizing the "International Waste Group Mocambique" company to import, export and store waste in Mozambique. The ministry says it was only waste - not toxic waste - that was involved. A Micoa statement sent to our newsroom says the decision was made "with a view to reiterating the principle of environmental protection followed by Mozambique and to leaving no doubts about its commitments to that principle, even though the order in question no longer has a legal standing nor can it be legally used."

Micoa argues that by issuing the order, Minister Bernardo Ferraz did so "on condition that the environmental protection rules included in the Basle and Bamako conventions would be upheld" .

Comment: And what about the permit issued by Planning and Finance Minister Tomaz Salomao? Has it expired or does it need to be revoked as Micoa's has been?
