Valor Economico/SABI via COMTEX Brazil, 11 October 2001 -- Monsanto`s new factory in Camacari (Bahia) will initiate production on October 15, with three components of the company`s Roundup herbicide being produced. These are currently imported at a cost of US$150mil. In the second phase of the factory, beginning in 2003, production of Glifosate, the main active ingredient of Roundup, and the herbicide itself will be produced at Camacari. Total investment in the plant is US$550mil. With the opening of the Camacari factory, the company will stop importing primary materials and will begin to export these to its factory in Argentina. Although there are tax incentives for the Bahian plant, the company says that Camacari was chosen because of the good infrastructure there. Water, steam and electricity will be supplied from the Copene petrochemical complex Copyright (c) 2001, South American Business Information, All rights reserved. FAIR USE NOTICE.
