Haznews, #147 TOKYO, Japan, September 2000 -- Police have arrested the Japanese chairman o the trading company allegedly involved in the illegal export of over 2,000 tonnes of industrial and medical waste from Japan to the Philippines. Katsuhiro Mizuguchi was detained in Cambodia having fled from Japan at the beginning of 2000. (see Haznews November 1999, p.11;May/June 2000, p.16). Kyodo news reports that a joint investigation by police from Japanese Prefectures of Nagano and Tochigi accuses Mr. Mizuguchi of conspiring with Hiromi Ito to dispose of the waste illegally. He was extradited from Cambodia and arrested at Narita airport on his arrival. mr. Ito, who was president of Nisso Ltd. , the now bankrupt Japanese waste management firm which exported the waste, has already pleaded guilty to a charge of illegally exporting hazardous waste to the Philippines. Masamiki Fueki, an employee of a firm affiliated with Nisso, has also pleaded guilty in a a separate trial. FAIR USE NOTICE.
