CHINESE CARGO SHIP CARRYING JAPANESE GARBAGE TURNS BACK

Japan Economic Newswire

BEIJING, 26 February 2002 -- A Chinese cargo ship loaded with household waste from Japan has been turned away by port authorities in Haimen, Zhejiang Province and is heading back to Japan without unloading, Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday. China bans the import of foreign wastes. Xinhua said the cargo ship, Fengshun No. 5, left Haimen port Monday. The ship reportedly listed its cargo as 1,200 tons of scrap iron, but customs officials discovered that the vessel was also carrying some 460 tons of discarded cans, vinyl and other household waste. The household waste was found under loads of discarded machine parts and steel pipes. Environmental groups have been protesting the export of waste to developing countries as potentially hazardous to public health.
