Chemical News and Intelligence TORONTO, Canada, 29 August 2002 -- -Canada announced Thursday its accession to the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides. In a statement from Johannesburg, South Africa, Canadian Environment Minister David Anderson said Canada will implement the required new regulations effective December this year. The new rules tighten controls on exports of certain chemicals and pesticides. Many exports will require the PIC of authorities in the respective recipient country, the statement noted. Said Anderson: "The convention is an important tool, particularly for developing nations, so that they may decide which chemicals they want to receive and to exclude those that they cannot manage safely." Anderson noted that most Canadian chemicals producers have been voluntarily complying with PIC since it was first drafted. Anderson and Prime Minister Jean Chretien are attending the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) under way in Johannesburg. The summit will end on 4 September. FAIR USE NOTICE.
